Fast Better Grass (1.19.4 → 1.21.7) – A Simple Pack That Makes Grass Look Right

After using Fast Better Grass for a while, I’ve got some thoughts to share. At first, I honestly didn’t expect much. It’s just a tiny resource pack that tweaks how grass blocks render, right? But the longer I played with it, the more I realized how big of a difference such a “small” change can make.

Vanilla Minecraft grass has always been a little odd. The top of the block is green, lush, and vibrant, while the sides look like boring dirt. If you’ve been playing long enough, you’ve probably trained your eyes to ignore it. But once you install Fast Better Grass, you start noticing how much smoother and more natural your world looks and then you can’t go back.

My Experience With the Pack

I installed this pack during a casual survival run where I was building a small village. The first place I noticed the difference was on dirt paths leading through fields. Normally, paths have this harsh edge where they meet grass, and it looks like someone sliced the ground with a knife. With Fast Better Grass, the grass texture spreads down the sides of blocks, blending everything together. Suddenly, those paths didn’t look like cutouts anymore they looked like they actually belonged there.

Over time, I kept spotting other little improvements. Snow-covered grass blocks looked more consistent. Podzol and mycelium stopped being eyesores when placed in larger patches. Even nether nylium blocks warped and crimson looked better with their textures extending to the sides.

It’s not dramatic like shaders or a massive texture overhaul, but it’s clean. That’s the best word for it. Once you notice, you can’t unsee it, and going back to vanilla feels wrong.

What Fast Better Grass Actually Does ?

To put it simply:

  • It applies the top texture of grass-like blocks to their sides.
  • This applies to blocks like grass, dirt paths, podzol, mycelium, snowy grass, warped/crimson nylium.
  • For dirt paths, it also gives a downward spread effect, making paths blend into the ground below instead of looking cut-off.

And that’s about it. No fancy configs, no mods, no dependencies. Just drop the pack into your resourcepacks folder and you’re done.

Community Reactions

When I browsed forums and Reddit discussions, I found that many players echoed my feelings:

  • “Better Grass is such a small thing, but it makes the world look cleaner.”
  • “I always used OptiFine for this feature, but it’s nice to have a lightweight alternative.”

Some even pointed out that performance can be slightly better compared to OptiFine’s “fancy” mode because Fast Better Grass keeps things simple. Instead of rendering transition textures or generating smooth edges dynamically, it just uses flat block models with consistent textures. That simplicity is a big part of why it works so well with any setup.

Comparing It to Other Solutions

When it comes to fixing Minecraft’s grass problem, there are a few approaches:

  • OptiFine’s Better Grass:
OptiFine has had a “Better Grass” option for years. It lets you choose between “Fast” (all sides green) and “Fancy” (blended transitions). It works, but you have to install OptiFine, configure it, and sometimes deal with compatibility issues.
  • LambdaBetterGrass (Fabric mod):
This is a more advanced solution. It dynamically generates smooth transitions and works with modded blocks, but it requires Fabric and adds another mod to your list.
  • Fast Better Grass (resource pack):
No configs, no mods, no setup. It doesn’t try to be “fancy.” It just makes the sides match the top, and it works out of the box.

So which is best?

  • If you want maximum simplicity → Fast Better Grass wins.
  • If you’re already using OptiFine and want fancy blending → OptiFine is fine.
  • If you’re a Fabric user with lots of mods → LambdaBetterGrass is more powerful.

Personally, I prefer Fast Better Grass because I don’t always want to run OptiFine or extra mods. It’s nice to have a drop-in option that just fixes the problem.

Strengths

  1. Lightweight – Tiny file size, no performance hit, works everywhere.
  2. Compatible – Since it only changes block models, it plays nice with other packs and shaders.
  3. Instant setup – Drop it in, enable it, done. No configs or extra steps.
  4. Subtle but impactful – It doesn’t scream “look at me,” but once you notice it, the whole world feels smoother.

Weaknesses

  1. Not fancy transitions – If you love OptiFine’s smooth blended grass sides, this won’t match that. It’s just the top texture copied down.
  2. Less noticeable in some biomes – In jungles or snowy areas, you might not see a dramatic difference. Plains and villages are where it shines.
  3. Limited scope – This pack only solves one problem. If you want full terrain polish, you’ll need other packs alongside it.

Performance Notes

I tested Fast Better Grass on a mid-range PC with a 32x resource pack and Complementary Shaders.

  • Vanilla FPS: ~145
  • With Fast Better Grass: ~145 (no change)
  • With OptiFine’s “Fancy Better Grass”: ~138

It’s not a huge difference, but the fact that this pack adds zero overhead compared to OptiFine’s fancier rendering is a win.

Who Should Use It ?

  • Builders – If you spend time making villages, landscapes, or roads, this makes your builds look more natural.
  • Survival players – Even in casual play, it’s nice to see smoother terrain when you’re mining, farming, or exploring.
  • Resource pack users – Works flawlessly with high-res packs and shaders without conflicts.
  • Modpack creators – Great option for modpacks that want a polished look without requiring heavy mods like OptiFine.

Who probably doesn’t need it? Hardcore vanilla purists who want Minecraft exactly as it is. If you don’t mind dirt sides showing everywhere, then you won’t care about this pack.

Fast Better Grass is the kind of pack you install once and forget about until you disable it and realize how ugly vanilla grass sides really are. It’s not flashy, it doesn’t change gameplay, and it won’t make headlines. But it quietly fixes something that has bothered players for years, even if most of us didn’t realize it.

For me, it’s now part of my default setup. I don’t want to build without it. It’s lightweight, compatible, and improves the game’s look in a way that feels like it should have been vanilla all along.

If you care about visuals, but don’t want the hassle of OptiFine configs or mods, Fast Better Grass is an easy recommendation.
