Aerosol – Minimal Visual Enhancement Shader

SHADER

Aerosol is a minimal shader that adds sharp shadows, low-cost reflections, and custom sky/fog without heavy processing.

Aerosol is designed for players who want better-looking Minecraft without sacrificing performance. Unlike resource-intensive shaders that require high-end GPUs, Aerosol focuses on core visual upgrades that run well on older or integrated graphics hardware. It solves the common problem of having to choose between playable frame rates and decent visuals by offering a middle ground: noticeable improvements that stay lightweight.

This shader is best suited for low-end systems, laptops with integrated GPUs, or anyone who needs a stable 60+ FPS while still enjoying sharper shadows, basic reflections, and a more atmospheric sky. It is also a good starting point for players who are new to shaders and want a simple, no-frills experience.

  • Sharp shadows – Directional shadows that cast clearly on blocks and entities, improving depth perception without the performance cost of soft shadow filters.
  • Low-cost reflections – Screen-space reflections that add subtle shine to water and metallic surfaces, using a simple sampling method that avoids expensive ray tracing.
  • Custom sky and fog – Replaces the default sky with a gradient and adds distance fog that blends with the horizon, giving a more cohesive outdoor look.
  • Basic subsurface scattering – Simulates light passing through thin surfaces like leaves or stained glass, adding a gentle glow without complex calculations.
  • Basic filtering – includes exponential tonemapping for balanced brightness, gamma correction for accurate color output, and a purkinje effect that slightly shifts colors in low-light scenes.

Requirements and limits: Aerosol is built for Minecraft Java Edition with OptiFine or Iris Shaders. It works on most hardware from 2015 onward, including Intel HD Graphics 4000 or better. Do not expect realistic water or dynamic shadows – reflections are limited to on-screen geometry, shadows are sharp but not dynamic, and there are no advanced effects like volumetric clouds or god rays. The shader is compatible with most vanilla resource packs and does not require custom textures.
