Complementary Reimagined Review: Visuals, Performance & Verdict
SHADERScreenshots
Complementary Reimagined transforms Minecraft's lighting without sacrificing FPS. Here's an honest look at what it does well, where it falls short, and how it compares to BSL and Sildur's.
What Makes Complementary Reimagined Different?
There are dozens of shader packs for Minecraft. Most of them fall into one of two camps: packs that look incredible but tank your FPS, or packs that run smoothly but look underwhelming. Complementary Reimagined sits in neither camp and that's precisely what makes it worth talking about.
It was built as a complete rethink of the original Complementary Shaders, prioritizing a lighting style that feels natural rather than dramatic. Where many shader packs go heavy on bloom, lens flare, and oversaturated sunsets, Reimagined pulls back. The result is a Minecraft that looks like a better version of itself not a different game entirely.
How It Actually Looks Scene by Scene
Daytime outdoors Natural sunlight with soft shadows that shift as clouds move overhead. Colors stay close to vanilla greens look like grass, not neon. If you've ever found other shaders "too much", this is the one that won't bother you.
Underground and caves This is where Reimagined genuinely stands out. Torch and lava lighting feels warm and dynamic without the harsh contrast that makes some shader packs difficult to play with in dark areas. You can actually see what you're doing.
Night and moonlight Subtle blue-tinted moonlight with visible stars. Not pitch black, not artificially bright a middle ground that looks realistic without being inconvenient.
Rain and water Rain creates ripples on water surfaces and wet looks on blocks. Water reflections are clear without being mirror-perfect. Underwater visibility is better than most packs.
Performance — What to Realistically Expect
Complementary Reimagined is mid-weight. It's not as light as Potato Shaders, but it's nowhere near as demanding as Rethinking Voxels or similar cutting-edge packs.
| Hardware | FPS with Reimagined (12 chunk render) |
|---|---|
| Integrated graphics (Intel/AMD) | 25–50 FPS |
| GTX 1060 / RX 580 | 80–140 FPS |
| RTX 3060 / RX 6700 | 200–300 FPS |
| RTX 3080+ | 300+ FPS |
If you're on integrated graphics, lower your render distance to 8 chunks and switch to the Low profile inside the shader settings. Playable, but not ideal.
Complementary Reimagined vs BSL vs Sildur's
This is the question most people actually have before installing any shader pack, so here's a straight answer:
Complementary Reimagined is the best all-around pick for most players. Natural look, solid performance, actively maintained, works well with Iris.
BSL Shaders leans warmer and more cinematic golden hour looks beautiful, but interiors and caves can feel overly yellow. Better choice if you prioritize atmosphere over accuracy.
Sildur's Vibrant Shaders is the most accessible option for low-end PCs, especially the Lite variant. Visuals are simpler but it runs on almost anything. Good starting point for players new to shaders.
| Reimagined | BSL | Sildur's Vibrant | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visual style | Natural | Cinematic/warm | Vibrant/colorful |
| Performance | Medium | Medium | Light–Medium |
| Low-end friendly | ⚠️ Borderline | ⚠️ Borderline | ✅ Yes |
| Cave lighting | ✅ Excellent | ⚠️ Too yellow | ✅ Good |
| Water & rain | ✅ Excellent | ✅ Good | ⚠️ Basic |
| Active updates | ✅ Yes | ✅ Yes | ⚠️ Slower |
Settings Worth Changing
Complementary Reimagined works well out of the box, but two settings are worth adjusting immediately:
Shadow Distance — Default is high, which costs FPS for a detail most players don't notice past 50 blocks. Dropping this to Medium recovers FPS with minimal visual difference.
Ambient Occlusion — Controls soft shadowing in corners and under blocks. If performance is tight, turning this down has the least visual impact of any setting.
Everything else can stay at default unless you have a specific reason to change it.
Who Should Use Complementary Reimagined?
It's the right choice if you want shaders that enhance Minecraft without making it feel unrecognizable. Players who spend a lot of time underground, in caves, or in detailed builds tend to prefer it over more dramatic alternatives because the lighting stays readable and practical.
It's probably not the right choice if you're specifically after cinematic screenshots or that heavily stylized golden-hour look — BSL handles that better.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it require Iris? It works with both Iris and OptiFine. Iris is recommended for better performance and compatibility with other Fabric mods.
Is there a Forge version? Yes — use it with OptiFine on Forge. For Fabric users, Iris is the better option.
Why does it look different from screenshots I've seen online? Complementary Reimagined has multiple quality profiles (Low, Medium, High, Ultra). Most showcase screenshots use Ultra. Make sure your profile matches what you're expecting.
Does it work with resource packs? Yes, and it pairs particularly well with faithful or PBR-compatible resource packs that add normal maps and specular textures — these unlock additional detail in the lighting system.
