Light-Shadow: Realistic Lighting and Atmospheric Shader

SHADER

Enhances Minecraft with dynamic shadows, global illumination, and LabPBR materials for deeper, more atmospheric scenes.

Light and Shadow directly addresses two common issues in default Minecraft: flat lighting and weak shadow definition. Block light often fails to cast believable shadows, and sky lighting alone leaves interiors looking washed out. This shader replaces those defaults with a shadow-mapping system that produces hard and soft shadows from torches, glowstone, and sunlight. It also adds global illumination (GI) to bounce light off surfaces, reducing harsh contrasts while keeping caves and night scenes dark and moody.

This shader is for builders, explorers, and technical players who want richer visuals without losing the blocky identity of Minecraft. It works well for screenshots, survival play, or custom maps where atmosphere matters. Casual players who prefer high frame rates or low system load should note this shader requires a dedicated GPU and may drop performance in dense scenes or with heavy post-processing enabled.

  • Shadow-map based shadows – Dynamic shadows from block light sources and moonlight, replacing flat lighting with depth.
  • Global illumination and AO – GI-based occlusion adds contact shadows where blocks meet; ambient occlusion darkens corners for more realistic interiors.
  • LabPBR material support – Displays normal maps, specular, and emissive textures from resource packs that follow the LabPBR standard.
  • Improved sky and block lighting – Brighter sunlight, smoother torch falloff, and tinted sky colors during sunrise and sunset.
  • Atmospheric effects – Volumetric fog, depth of field, and cinematic post-processing (bloom, tonemapping) for cutscene-style views.

Requirements: A graphics card that supports OpenGL 3.3 or higher (recommended: NVIDIA GTX 960 or AMD equivalent for 60 FPS at 1080p). Install OptiFine or Iris Shaders (for Fabric) and place the Light-Shadow.zip file in the shaderpacks folder. Disable incompatible mods that modify lighting or sky colors. Performance may drop in jungles, nether, or scenes with many dynamic lights; reduce shadow resolution and disable depth of field for smoother gameplay.
