Liminal Shader - Dreamcore Visuals for Minecraft

SHADER

A lightweight dreamlike shader for Minecraft with soft lighting, fog, and multiple presets, optimized for lower-end PCs.

The Liminal Shader addresses a specific gap in Minecraft's visual modding scene: providing a dreamlike, liminal atmosphere without demanding a high-end graphics card. Most atmospheric shaders either sacrifice performance or focus on realism. This shader instead prioritizes soft ambient lighting, gentle fog, and calm color grading to create unsettling yet peaceful spaces — ideal for Backrooms builds, liminal corridors, and exploration maps. It is built for players who want to feel like they are walking through a memory or a half-forgotten dream, not a photorealistic simulation.

Who should use this shader? Anyone playing on a lower-end PC (potato-tier hardware) who still wants a distinct visual mood. It is also a strong choice for builders and screenshot artists who focus on liminal spaces, empty rooms, and surreal landscapes. The shader is not designed for fast-paced PvP or bright daylight scenes; its strength lies in eerie, quiet moments and enhanced night moods. Currently in active development, so some advanced features (volumetric clouds, dynamic shadows) are not yet available — but the core experience is stable and usable for creative projects.

  • Soft ambient lighting that reduces harsh contrast and mimics overcast or indoor light.
  • Atmospheric fog that blends distant chunks into a hazy, dreamy backdrop.
  • Multiple presets (e.g., VHS, muted, warm) to tune the dreamlike look without editing files.
  • Calm color grading with pastel shifts and desaturated tones for a nostalgic feel.
  • Lightweight performance — runs on integrated graphics and older GPUs at 60+ FPS (1080p).

Requirements: The shader works exclusively with Iris Shader Loader and Minecraft version 1.20.1. It does not support OptiFine, Sodium is recommended alongside Iris. Minimum GPU: Intel HD Graphics 4000 or equivalent. Expect around 30–60 FPS on potato PCs (4GB RAM, Core i3). No PBR textures or complicated shadow algorithms are used — this keeps load times short. The shader is still being updated, so presets and fog controls will expand over time.
