Memory Leaks – Cursed Frame Persistence Shader

SHADER

A shaderpack that leaves ghostly echoes of previous frames, creating motion trails, screen burn-in, and monitor-like display artifacts.

Memory Leaks is an experimental shaderpack that deliberately breaks the clean frame-by-frame rendering you expect. Instead of crisp transitions, past frames bleed into the present, accumulating faint afterimages, directional smearing, and display-like imperfections. This pack is for players who want a haunted, glitchy aesthetic—perfect for horror maps, dream sequences, or anyone intrigued by the idea of a monitor that cannot fully let go of what it has shown.

Rather than chasing photorealism, Memory Leaks embraces the artifacts of aging screens and failing video memory. Every movement, from turning the camera to switching inventory slots, leaves a transient ghost. The result is a persistent visual texture that makes the world feel unstable and remembered rather than simply observed.

  • Frame persistence accumulation. Previous frames are blended into the current image using a dedicated buffer. Motion leaves behind subtle, fading imprints that gradually dissolve over a few seconds.
  • Directional smearing. Fast horizontal movements produce stretched, fragmented trails—reminiscent of LCD ghosting or video compression errors—rather than smooth blur.
  • Monitor simulation layer. The final image passes through scanlines, bloom, and tonal compression, mimicking a physical CRT or worn flatscreen display.
  • Temporal interface echoes. HUD elements, inventories, and chat messages briefly persist after closing, printing a faint shadow of the UI onto the world.
  • Configurable ghosting strength. Multiple presets and adjustable fade time let you tune how aggressively the past lingers, from barely noticeable to nearly unplayable.

Memory Leaks requires Iris or OptiFine on a modern GPU with framebuffer support. It is designed for vanilla-like lighting and does not add complex shadows or reflections. Because persistent trails can obscure fast action, it is not recommended for competitive PvP or speedrunning. Some HUD mods and custom UIs may interact unexpectedly with the temporal buffer, and the shader performs best at a stable frame rate to keep ghost accumulation consistent.
