NostaLens – Fisheye CRT Shader with VHS Artifacts

SHADER

A nostalgic shader pack that adds a fisheye lens, VHS noise, and retro colors without distorting UI or held items.

NostaLens is a shader pack that deliberately distorts your Minecraft view with a vintage, almost “cursed” analog aesthetic. Instead of chasing photorealism, it leans into the imperfections of old CRT televisions and VHS tapes. The standout feature is a fisheye lens projection that warps the world at the screen edges, but cleverly keeps your held items and HUD elements completely undistorted. This lets you enjoy the surreal wide-angle look without sacrificing inventory management or combat readability.

Built for players who want a strong dose of nostalgia without the usual performance tax, NostaLens runs well on lower-end hardware—it’s genuinely potato-friendly. The color palette gets a warm, slightly faded treatment that mimics aged film stock, while a suite of subtle screen artifacts (chromatic aberration, scanlines, barely noticeable tracking jitter, and fine film grain) sells the retro illusion. The pack also includes cool-toned ambient shadows and smooth percentage-closer filtering (PCF) soft shadows, adding depth while keeping the scene visually cohesive.

What sets this shader apart is its self-contained approach. The fisheye warp is a post-processing effect that leaves the UI layer intact, solving a common frustration with lens distortion shaders that make hotbar text unreadable. The analog noise never becomes overwhelming; tracking errors and grain are tuned to sit in the background, so mining and building remain comfortable even during long sessions. You can further tailor the strength of the effect by editing the shader file directly—no complex menus required.

  • UI-safe fisheye lens: Distorts the world near screen edges while keeping arms, tools, and HUD perfectly legible.
  • Full VHS emulation: Chromatic aberration, faint scanlines, subtle screen jitter, and a fine grain overlay for an authentic analog look.
  • Retro color grading: Slightly boosted vibrance wrapped in a warm, faded tone reminiscent of worn VHS recordings.
  • Soft cool shadows: Ambient shadows with a cool tint and smooth PCF soft shadow filtering.
  • Lightweight performance: Designed to run on integrated graphics and older systems; well suited for “potato” PCs.

NostaLens requires OptiFine or Iris Shaders and must be placed in your shaderpacks folder as a .zip file. To change the fisheye intensity or vignette, open shaders/final.fsh in any text editor and adjust the STRENGTH and VIGNETTE values at the top. Keep in mind this is a stylized, “cursed” pack—it intentionally breaks visual perfection, and the noise effects may not appeal to everyone.
