PS2 Shader - CRT TV Retro Shader

SHADER

Recreates PS2-era CRT TV visuals in Minecraft with fog, color grading, and low-end performance.

The PS2 Shader applies a CRT television filter to Minecraft, replicating the visual feel of PlayStation 2 games. It adds a soft scanline effect, limited color range, and a characteristic fog that mimics the depth limitations of older consoles. The result is a distinct retro look that reduces the sharpness of modern Minecraft without sacrificing playability.

This shader is built for players who want a nostalgic, low-fidelity aesthetic without demanding hardware. It solves the problem of overly crisp and bright Minecraft visuals by introducing film-like color grading, adjustable brightness and contrast, and a fog that blends distant chunks. It is particularly suited for older computers, integrated graphics, or anyone running Minecraft on a laptop from the late 2000s. The shader works best with resource packs that have lower resolution textures (16x or 8x) to complete the retro feel.

  • CRT fog with adjustable render distance – simulates the limited draw distance of PS2 hardware
  • Brightness, contrast, and saturation controls – fine-tune the image to match specific console outputs
  • Fully customizable via Iris shader menu – no external config files needed
  • Runs on potato PCs – designed for low-end hardware with minimal performance impact
  • Scanline overlay and slight color bleeding – adds authentic CRT artifacts

Requirements: The PS2 Shader requires Iris Shaders (recommended version 1.7 or later) and is not compatible with OptiFine, Sodium standalone, or other shader loaders. It works with Minecraft Java Edition 1.20+ and most vanilla or lightweight modpacks. Performance on extremely old integrated graphics (e.g., Intel HD 3000) may still see frame drops with full render distance – reducing fog distance and disabling scanlines can help.
