Serie - Experimental Path-Traced Shader for Minecraft Java Edition

SHADER

Serie is an experimental path-traced shaderpack for Minecraft Java Edition that replaces Allium with advanced lighting and atmospheric effects.

Serie is an experimental path-traced shaderpack for Minecraft Java Edition, built as the direct successor to Allium. It serves as the foundation for Allium's upcoming rewrite, shifting from rasterized lighting to full path tracing. This means every pixel's light contribution is calculated by tracing rays through the scene, producing realistic indirect illumination, soft shadows, and color bleeding. The shaderpack is intentionally in active development, so settings, buffer layouts, and visual behavior will change between builds. Users should expect occasional bugs and incomplete features.

Serie is designed for players who want the most physically accurate lighting possible in Minecraft and are comfortable with an experimental, work-in-progress tool. It is not intended for casual or performance-sensitive use, as path tracing demands significant GPU resources. The shaderpack replaces Allium entirely and is best suited for players running Iris Shaders on compatible hardware who are willing to test and report issues. Those playing on Minecraft 1.26.x or using Vulkan should note that support is planned but not a current priority; the developer is focusing on reaching a stable release before attempting another rewrite.

  • Path-traced lighting – Full global illumination with realistic indirect light bounce, soft shadows, and color bleeding.
  • Atmospheric scattering and volumetric effects – Simulated sky light scattering, volumetric light shafts, cumulus and altocumulus cloud layers.
  • Water and glass enhancements – Water parallax and vertex displacement, screen-space refraction and reflection, generated normals for glass and ice.
  • Distant Horizons support – Works with the Distant Horizons mod (Voxy integration upcoming).
  • Integrated PBR – Physically based rendering materials are supported; note that LabPBR format is not yet available.

To run Serie, you need Minecraft Java Edition, a recent version of Iris Shaders, a GPU and driver supporting OpenGL 4.3, and Iris custom-image support (required for voxel and irradiance-cache volumes). OptiFine is not supported. Distant Horizons is optional. Given the experimental nature, performance will vary and settings may reset between updates. The shaderpack is free to download from Modrinth; no external links or payment are required.
