ZigCRT - Wavy CRT Distortion Shader

SHADER

A lightweight Minecraft shader that adds analog signal warping, scanlines, and color quantization for a nostalgic CRT look.

ZigCRT is a post-processing shader designed for players who want to replace Minecraft's clean digital display with the unstable, wavy imperfections of an old CRT monitor or VHS recording. It solves the problem of missing retro aesthetic options: many shaders aim for realism, but few offer the specific low-fidelity, analog distortion that recreates late-90s camcorder footage. This shader is ideal for builders creating nostalgic scenes, roleplay servers set in past decades, or anyone who prefers a soft, dated visual quality over sharp modern graphics.

It is not intended for competitive gameplay or high-precision tasks, as the screen warping and reduced color depth can obscure fine details. However, for ambiance and theming, ZigCRT provides a consistent, atmospheric effect that works well with vanilla or modded Minecraft. The shader is deliberately simple — no bloom, no shadows, no reflections — focusing only on CRT-like artifacts that run smoothly even on older hardware.

  • Analog signal warping: The image bends and drifts horizontally and vertically, mimicking an unstable video signal without interfering with controls or causing motion sickness.
  • Color quantization: Colors are reduced to a limited palette, creating posterized gradients that resemble compressed video from the 1990s.
  • CRT scanlines: Fine horizontal lines run across the screen, reproducing the texture of vintage televisions and security monitors while staying subtle enough to not impair vision.
  • Natural vignette: Brightness gradually falls off toward the edges of the screen, adding depth and focusing attention on the center of the view.

To use ZigCRT, you need either OptiFine or Iris Shaders (version 1.20 or later). Any GPU supporting OpenGL 3.1 or higher will run it; the shader is classified as "potato" for its minimal performance impact. No additional mods are required, and it works with most resource packs. Note that the wavy distortion cannot be customised in-game, and the effect is always active — there is no toggle for individual features.
